Original ballpoint pen drawing of a pike on an original 1983 Royal Mail first day cover with four stamps from the British River Fishes series - 29p perch, 26p Trout, 19 1/2p Pike and 15 1/2 p Salmon.
On a gloomy winter's morning I went for a potter around a local town which has a lot of antique, vintage and retro shops and came across a few Royal Mail First Day Covers (an envelope bearing a stamp or set of stamps postmarked on their day of issue) and had to buy them.
At the time I had no idea what I was going to do with them. It was a little while later after making some sketches of animals in ballpoint pen (a much underrated drawing tool in my opinion) that the idea of a pike swimming came to mind. It's an unusual surface to use in artwork but I feel it adds depth and interest to the end work and I have several ideas brewing for my next ones!
