Artist's description:

The pigeon is largely grey with a neck patch and bands of white on the wings, making this bird clearly discernable in flight.

It’s cooing call is a familiar sound in woodlands as is the loud clatter of its wings when it flies away.

The pigeon is shy in the countryside, it can be tame and approachable in towns and cities.

Pigeons substitute the ledges of buildings for sea cliffs, they have adapted to urban life and are abundant in towns and cities throughout the world.

The pigeon is referred to by some as a ‘rat with wings’, which is not particularly polite, but this bird is also cherished by others. The Pigeon is an interesting, resourceful and successful bird that is not to be underestimated.

The large flocks that are a feature of many urban areas may despoil our architecture but fascinate children and those who may not be able to access other free-living wildlife.

Urban populations of pigeons are now exploited by the increasing population of urban nesting Peregrines. In a way, the humble pigeon is inadvertently contributing to conservation.
