Artist's description:

My wife and I have driven by this beach countless times while driving up and down Hwy 1, but never stopped till a few months ago. What an amazing, 100% California Beauty. That day inspired this painting.

My artistic interpretation of this scenery involves the placement of many of the elements you'll see right away, and others that you may not notice until a few visual passes.

My use of a mostly unbroken and level horizon was done on purpose. Many California natives will agree about the endless daydreams that this horizon will conjure. It's such a part of the skyline I wanted it a part of this painting. I chose the use of an artistic S-curve starting with the horizon line from the right. I then chose to place another artificial horizon by use of a diagonal line from the land on the left back to the right most waves. This line delineates the foreground surf with sea foam and the background with a cooler and more distant blue which seemingly stretches to infinity with the horizon. The S curve ends with the left side wave. I chose to purposefully have the wave landing near the edge of the painting to create user involvement and a feeling of being right there. From that point the eye explores the non uniform sea foam to the right. There is an eye fooling reflection just below the right wave that brings your eye into the crashing surf, and then naturally brings your attention tracing back up the s curve. The sky also holds many meandering paths for your eye to follow. What first seems to be a muted blue sky, turns out to be sky filled with sea fog that just cleared the way to the distant view. This may not be the typical composition, but what is undeniable is the way your eye keeps moving, always taking in new information. It is nearly as mesmerizing as being at the oceans edge!
