Artist's description:

This small series of bird paintings was inspired by the historical use of symbolic animals in church ornamentation. Pelicans were traditionally seen as an embodiment of sacrifice as it was believed the mother bird cut its own breast to feed its young. The use of gold and the flattening of the subject is a nod to the traditional practice of ikon painting.

Note: The painting is circular. The surrounding white is a card mount with beveled edge.

Materials used:

oil paint, gold leaf
