I like the work of William Nicholson (the father of Ben Nicholson) an Edwardian society painter who really excelled at still life and I also love the work of Euan Uglow, a sixties graduate of the Slade School of Art and known for his forensically observed nudes and still life paintings - this painting of mine is a response to both those painters' work. The colours are very important in creating the shape and shadows on the pears but actually although the colours need to be very accurate, much of the canvas is quite loosely painted so it still has a painterly rather than photographic feel.
