'Pathway to the Sun' is based on a section of the River Dart on the southern border of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, UK, where the footpath snakes alongside the river. The terrain fluctuates frequently and gives thwe impression of a slow motion woodland roller coaster ride. It was late afternoon in january and the sun was an hour or so away from setting.
I began the picture by laying down an acrylic gold base, before setting about establishing the outlines of the composition. The next stage was to build up the areas for shadows and highlights, before the rather lengthy process of adding the detail.
This project was one of my projects in january (the other being building my website) and up took most of the daylight hours that were on offer. I wanted to create a large work that incorporated all the ideas that I have been working on recently and so it's with great pleasure that I am now able to share it.
