Artist's description:

Mackerel. Scromber Scrombrus, Lineaus 1748. Healthy and rich on vitamin B12.

Bistre on light textured watercolour paper.

Bistre is made of the soot of burnt beachwood or walnut shells. Which is then water dilluted. The old masters used it. It was also used to colour furniture. As it is not lightfast in itself, a protective spray is used to keep the colour.
