I believe with a muted palette it is possible to achieve more variation and nuance of tone and color.
When this painting was exhibited at the Phyllis Harriman Gallery, someone came up to me and said, "Your painting doesn't scream out at you, but invites you in." I like that! I believe my paintings are very sensitive. I am very sensitive!
I never set out to do it, but this painting reminds me of a modern day JMW Turner! It is so atmospheric and soft. That's why I named it on the waterfront - it sort of reminds me of the sun through the mist coming off the water.
When I am painting, I am not thinking of what I want it to look like. It is all spontaneous, one thing leading to the next. I love the freedom and intensity of working with drips. I try to utilize them into the composition and not just make a so-called drip painting, which I think are kind of boring.
This is a big canvas - oversized. It would look great on a wall by itself or over a sofa. It can also hang horizontally - 90 degrees clockwise.
