I grew up in Ohio and I think that’s where my love of barns came from. I lived near the city but in the country so I really had the best of both worlds. There were so many country roads and lush farmland, much of which is gone now, replaced with housing developments, mini malls and fast food restaurants. Sad.
I have two special memories of barns. The first was when I was a little girl and I had the opportunity to visit my cousins who lived on a horse farm in Indiana. I spent two weeks in heaven on that farm. They had just built a brand new barn for their Arabian horses. It had a loft on each side of the barn, high up over the stables. We would climb the ladder up into the loft and then jump down into a hay stack below. It was quite a jump and I was terrified to try it, but once I did it, I kept climbing the ladder over and over again to make the jump. We spent many hours playing in that beautiful barn. One day we found some kittens that a calico cat had given birth hidden in some hay bales in the loft. One was black and white, another tan and white, but my favorite was a little grey and white one. I loved that cat! I wanted so much to bring it home with me–didn’t happen.
Another favorite memory took place as an adult. While we were living in Texas when we were invited to a friend’s house for Thanksgiving. We had Thanksgiving dinner in their barn. It was a beautiful warm day and many of our friends were there. We ate fried turkey for the first time and loved it! The meal was the best Thanksgiving meal I’d ever had and the party went late into the night. It’s still one of my best holiday memories ever.
So, I’m in some way connected to barns and farms and country life and that inspired this painting.
