This oil painting shows a seated man in knee-breeches in front of two seascapes. The man is Odysseus who gave his name to the Odyssey, an epic poem attributed to Homer. In the Odyssey, Homer describes the 10-year journey of Odysseus, going home after the Trojan war. During this long voyage Odysseus is swept all over the Mediterranean. From Troy (Turkey) to the rough waters near Scilla and Charybdis (Sicilly) over the great wide open seas and finally home to Ithaca (Greece). Always at the mercy of the gods on the Olympus. I choose to give Odysseus both rough waters and the wide open seas as background and depicted him rather tenacious: he just wants to go home.
This oil painting is a handmade, unique artwork, signed at the back. It is painted on linen, using artist grade oil paints, media and varnish. The painting is composed of several overlapping layers that work together to create a three-dimensional effect. You can find more detailed information on my painting method including a few examples of successive paint layers of a painting in the 'Me at work' section of this website.
