Artist's description:

This work uses a combination of surface detail and shading to create an engaging image with the illusion of depth.

I created this work as part of a series focusing on the use of repeating forms and shapes to create 'cells' withing which to create patterns and texture. My aim has always been to challenge myself to create finicky detail while still retaining a sense of balance, and to engage the viewer. In addition, the use of shading infers depth and surface texture on a flat sheet of paper, allowing the viewer to fill in the gaps with their imagination.

The decoration is in part inspired by Gothic cathedral decorations, the brass fixings and elaborate fascinations created to awe the average churchgoer.

This work is sold mounted but unframed.

Materials used:

Black pen and ink, white cartridge paper
