Artist's description:

Heros of my childhood.

It is one of my loveliest stories of Formula-1. Lauda was the only pilot who races Nürburgring’s Nordschleife faster than 7 minutes. Just imagine, 23 kilometers in 7 minutes. It is almost 200 km/h of average speed.
Sunday, August 1, 1976. Saturday rain was so heavy that qualification was cancelled. Asphalt was wet and pilots started the race on rain-tires. But during the first circle it became clear that slick would be faster. All leaders changed their tires as well as Niki. On the second circle just before the Bergwerk turn Niki’s car slipped on a small puddle in a very fast small curve. He hit the barrier on a full speed. Terrible blow made his Ferrari at fire. Then the car stopped in the middle of the racetrack and one of the following pilots bumped it.
No fire rescue at this part of the track. Even no marshal at this point. No one to help and fore pilots left their cars to help Niki. Arturo Merzario, Brett Lunger, Guy Edwards and Harald Ertl. Guy Edwards later said: The heat and noise were incredible. It was not a pretty sight at all. I was running towards the fire and I was thinking - do I really want to do this? The honest answer was 'no way'. But what could I do? Stop and walk back? Holy hell, it was a mess.
When rescue car arrived in 40 seconds after accident, Lauda had been already pulled out.
When a child, I loved this story of speed, courage and brave.
In a month and a half after the accident Lauda returned to the races to become world champion two more times. He is 69 at the moment and he is ok.

On this picture Ferrari is already on the slick tires and flies up in the Flugplatz turn. Only one minute to crash
