Night Forest II is a continuation of ‘Night Forest I’ and ‘Transmissions’ in Gillies’ exploration of Night scenes.
Painted over two canvases, framed together as one. This large painting depicts a forested valley at night.
The painting has dark tones ranging from deep blue-black, copper tones, and hints of turquoise. Every colour was mixed with a base of either copper or pewter paint which, depending on the lighting and angle of view, gives the painting a shimmer.
In low light the painting is dark and holds its secrets, should the sun catch it the colours are revealed.
Signed on the reverse as the artist finds signatures compromise the painting unless they can be hidden sufficiently, so in this case, it's signed on the back to preserve the composition.
