Artist's description:

'Night Forest' is part of the artist's collection of work produced on his returned to Glasgow from several months living in the Japanese Alps over a winter.

The Night Forest theme is often revisited by the artist. Unseen mountains and deep dark forests. This painting was the first produced from his new studio in September 2017 where he began his Japan collection.
This painting is not of a particular place, works by Gillies of this nature rarely are, but they are often inspired by late night walks and memories.
He particularly enjoys painting these as they can be quite minimal and rather than creating an intentional depiction of a place the artist likes to let the picture present itself during the process.

It was created using acrylic paint, and a salting technique to create pattern and texture.
It is unvarnished as the artist feels this is unnecessary and would kill the depth, in its natural state the painting absorbs the light rather than having light reflecting off it changing the look.

The artist has added a simple cut thin black stained wood trim to the surround of the canvas as a 'temporary' frame.
This can be easily replaced for a sharper look at minimal cost from any reputable picture framer. Gillies tends to prefer a more natural homemade look, given the theme of this painting the finish rather suits it.

The scene contains the view of a mountainside. Banked with trees. Its deep and dark black in the foreground with hints of colours amongst the trees, copper and green with a bright white dash in the upper centre of the painting. It's minimal and this allows space for the viewer to project upon it. Perhaps the indication of a waterfall leading into a dark lake. Or deeper darker forests where the trees are unseen in the night.

The frame wood is stained black.
