Question for the artist?

Artist's description:

In 2007 I went on an amazing journey to Pakistan. One day our bus stopped about 6,000 feet up the Karakoram mountains, near the Chinese border. We got out and to our amazement saw hundreds of beautiful carvings in the rocks by the roadside. They pre-date all the major religions – probably around seven to ten thousand years old - and were mostly of animals with a few human figures.

I made a page of detailed drawings of as many as I could and then scaled up the drawings onto blocks and cut and printed them. I liked the idea of carving them into blocks as they were carvings in the first place and it gave me a connection with the original artists.

I have accentuated the stark, clean lines by using a deep black and concentrating on the simple abstract technique used in the original. There is something primal and universal about these images that shows through whatever the medium.

This lino print is part of a series of four mythic animals which are probably representations of Ibex.

Materials used:

Oil pigment onto Zercoll paper.
