If you are knowledgeable in art history, you know that Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" is actually called "La Gioconda." As I worked on this piece, I thought a lot about da Vinci and the questions that have followed Mona Lisa around for generations: What is she thinking? What is her story? And---it occurred to me that my painted lady was asking for the same answers. Then, I also started thinking about how the painting of the Mona Lisa might be different if Leonardo executed it in this modern age. And, I decided that she'd have probably have been painted nude.
Coincidentally, this is the first painting I have done on linen; perhaps another way that Leonardo would paint if he were with us today.
So, when I finished this work, My Gioconda was born. The frame is custom, black wood with a linen liner between the frame and the painting.
P.S. Any slight resemblance to the singer, Madonna, is not intentional and completely a coincidence.
