Mushrooms really are magical. Neither plants nor animals, these Funghi create their own kingdoms, sometimes building up vast colonies beneath the ground.
I first became interested in mushrooms after reading a letter my father had sent to me as a young teenager. I didn't find the letter till after he died. In the letter, he says, "maybe you were a bit like me, a bit like a mushroom?" I think he meant 'kept in the dark'. It's an interesting interplay between the idea of a mushroom being such a huge feeding machine for many plants, yet at the same time the body of mycelium is hidden from view. As human's, a similar thing can often happen; we live in a world of secrets at times, yet we forge our own way, somehow still growing, forging connections and living.
