Artist's description:

Towards dawn more and more people gather near to the pool where the water would soon be blessed by the priests and sprinkled over the faithful to celebrate the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan. Everyone wears white for the rebaptism in amazing contrast to the brilliant colours and the shining threads of the priests clothes. The woman and her son wait to take their turn

The Ethiopian festival of Timkut takes place on 19 or 20 January and Tabots, or copies of the Ark of the Covenant, held in each church are moved to the central place of worship by a stream or pool where the Divine Liturgy will take place and thereafter the next day, the blessing and sprinkling of holy water.

I have used a structural medium to give the painting texture and in the background is lettering in reverse taken from a copy of a page of a bible in the ancient language of Ge'ez

The painting is on a single piece of board

This painting is on a flat sheet of board

The writing under the painting is a reverse copy of a page of an old bible in the ancient language of Ge'ez which I used to add intensity

Materials used:

Oil and paper
