Artist's description:

This painting was inspired by an old photograph of my mother and grandmother. The motif of the mother and child appeals to something deep in the human psyche, bringing to mind our own relationships, our nurturing and need of nurture - it recalls Christian images of the Virgin and Child as well as similar representations from other times, religions and cultures.

The technique I have used here involves direct application of acrylic paint to smooth hardboard. The image is constantly defined and redefined using charcoal, and the charcoal stabilised each time with fixative. The technique allows a pastel-like use of paint combined with transparent washes, and the fixative gives the finished painting a burnished effect.

Materials used:

Acrylic paint, charcoal, fixative
