Original artwork description:

A grey interior, viewed from low down, lit from behind us on our left. A shadowy figure in a plain long garment busys herself in the left part of the painting, to her left - barely clear - a chair faces into the space. On the right of the space, a bedstead on the mezzanine level with a plain white passage outside beneath it, the visible bright portal of passage split by the narrow mezzanine floor. Just off centre, on the only ledge available, the shadow of a small plant. This was lifted from a screenshot taken from a war documentary. The scene spoke to me in a way I didn't really understand so I painted it to figure out why. This became a study for a larger painting about the mind, but has a great deal of gravitas on its own. The image became about hemispheres of the mind - rest, maintenance, half-understandings, precarious viewpoints and the shadow of growth, but nothing clear.
