This work is a hybrid of painting and relief sculpture, formed from offcuts of wood arranged into a precise formal composition and painted on. I wanted to try and translate some of the ideas used in my painting into three dimensions, and to experiment with the process of assemblage and the use of found materials. The piece is influenced by modernist abstraction and the work of artists such as Paul Klee and Kurt Schwitters.
The process of making the piece involves a careful consideration of the way that the forms and colours in the work relate to one another to create an overall sense of equilibrium or visual trajectory.
