Artwork description:

Misty Forest So Silent, is a pencil drawing completed in 2014 which was part of a 'misty forest' collection, this particular drawing was an experiment in making the forest as minimal as possible yet still, give the feeling of a deep dense forest.

This was one of the last drawings of the 20+ collection taking the elements which worked best from the rest of the series in the artists' intention to create a 'final piece'.

The drawing was completed using pencil and graphite stick smudging on heavyweight paper. There is no colour used just different tones created by layering grades of pencil mostly in the upper 'b' range, along with a graphite stick used on a cloth to create light smudge areas for the impression of a floating mist amongst the trees and foliage of the forest.

This is a dreamlike picture. Of no particular place, but inspired by forests on the South side of Loch Ness where the artist spent his formative years and where he began drawing trees. Birch trees are a recurring theme in Gillies's work, appearing in his drawings, paintings and photographic work.
The trees in this drawing are conifers, perhaps pines. Gillies intends to not create a realistic botanical recreation of a pine tree, but enough that it has the spirit of a pine tree.
This drawing has been mistaken as a photographic often, it's not intended as 'photo realistic' but does have that feeling.

In January 2016 the artist was staying in the alpine town of Hakkuba, Japan on an artistic quest. On a quite surreal moment while reviewing photographs from the day spent in the forest in a wild snow storm Gillies found himself looking at an almost identical photograph of this drawing.
To find yourself in the actual reality of your artwork was deeply surreal and very exciting at the same time.

The mount is charcoal grey colour, and the wooden frame a darker teal blue. The drawing comes professionally framed and ready to hang.
