Miss Red Guard is a key work in the early development of Polipanda. It is a response to a place, an historical event, a personal memory and a political history that has had a profoundly impacted generations of Chinese. This work every symbolzes the transition of my personal and political identity.
The blooming peonies as eyes suggest that the gaze is censored. The dance figures wallpaper background, the star and the red military stripe on the uniform evokes complex feelings of tender feminine youth tinted with nostalgia.
The wallpaper background directly satirises the principle of popular art of the Cultural Revolution. The wallpaper spangled with female dance figures blends two cultural icons: Wonder Woman from American culture and the Cultural Revolutional Opera Dancer. Both were my heroines in my childhood. Embedded together with my self-image they mirror the socio – political and personal ideologies that shape me as an individual.
