Artist's description:

Midgard was the name of the mortal world (Earth) in Norse mythology. I'd spent a lot of time drawing, painting and researching the Gods, realms and creatures of the Norsemen, and I started to think about where the mythology originated from and the people told and believed in the tales. A great deal of the threats and dangers in Norse mythology are elemental (frost giants, nature spirits etc). This is probably because of how dangerous and unforgiving it was for the Norsemen living in Scandinavia. I envisioned a 'viking' settlement with hunters and warriors gathered around a fire. The contrast of the cool blues and the warm yellow tones drives this painting - man verses nature, danger verses safety. I wanted to suggest the scope and scale of this world in the starry sky. The format of the painting was also chosen for this purpose. This was a challenge to paint, but I think the work paid off in the end.
