Artist's description:

For once, I knew what this artwork would be called before I finished it. Metamorphosis, as well as describing the development of a caterpillar into a butterfly, is also a good description of this piece. It started out as a colour field painting, but I wasn't happy with how that was turning out so I started to cover it with torn off pieces of newspaper. Then I tore them off again and covered what was left with paint. I still didn't like the result but I thought it would make a good background. The foreground, I decided, would be a huge butterfly mosaic, made from coloured squares cut out of pages of magazines. This is the result. This artwork has been varnished, giving a glossy finish.

Materials used:

Gesso primed paper, acrylic paint, newpaper and magazine paper, varnish
