Artist's description:

Part of The Manta Ray Series, here the demise of "Europe" (see earlier artwork of the same name) is long ago as can be seen by the totemic/standing stones'esque Broken Pointing Fingers, the final stage after the Broken Hand Island era. The original Broken Hand Island (see earlier etching "Coco Nonplussed by Death") came from a plaster cast of his hand made by my son at Art College. And here, in this picture he appears as his younger self (the SeaBoy) as he does "a merman I should turn to be" (a line from Hendrix's classic track "1983" from 1968) and below the surface in the foreground he can be seen swimming away with feathers for arms, almost. The sunset in the distance could almost be a continuous, permanent state of light as in that of a red giant, dying sun, whereby there is a need to leave that planet, though through the sea would seem to indicate that this is not your usual planetary dimension but another where the seas are endless.

The transitions of the Manta Ray are not just linear here - other beings are metamorphosing into feathered swimming creatures as well.
