This painting is part of my Arthurian Legends series, and is based upon the characters of Merlin and Morgan Le Fay.
Merlin is infamous, known even to those unfamiliar with Arthurian Legend. His origins, character, and the events of his life vary greatly in each retelling. He is commonly known as a great wizard, who aids the legendary King Arthur. My Merlin is much like the classic wizard, with some Celtic influence. I love the mystery that surrounds the character, and I tried to inject some of that into this depiction of the character.
Morgan Le Fay is another character who's story, and very existence in Arthurian Legend, varies depending on which version you encounter. One fairly common theme is that she possesses some sort of magical powers, and often appears as an antagonist in some shape or form. I love the idea that she once studied under Merlin, and that mentor verses apprentice theme is at the core of this painting.
I wanted this piece to be dynamic, dramatic and epic, but also be rooted in nature somehow. The setting is inspired by some photographs of the North Yorkshire Moors I took a few years back.
This painting is larger than most of my other pieces, which allowed me to paint a little more expressively, and loosely. I love the subject, and this was a joy to work on.
