Question for the artist?

Artist's description:

Large charcoal drawing on yellowish off-white paper with white chalk highlights. Framed in black wood. While in South East Asia I became fascinated with the history of the Malaysian Chinese merchants, known as the Peranakan or Baba Nyonya. This young bride is from a series of old black and white photographs recording the life of the women from the 19th and early 20th century in Melaka. The images are aged and shadowy, very mysterious, as were the women who were kept at home, never seen by outsiders to the family.

Materials used:

charcoal, chalk
