The painting takes its inspiration from the famous Medusa head by Caravaggio. The Medusa or Gorgon was a monster whose gaze had the power to petrify anyone who looked at her. The hallucinated eyes and the tension emanating from the female face are enhanced by the dark background of the hair, from which streams of blood flow out as the head was severed. The background colour of the composition is blue to calm the whole composition and to represent the artist's dream and imagination.
