Artist's description:

This little hedgie was rescued by Folly Wildlife Hospital in Kent and so I had the plight of British hedgehogs in mind as I started to draw, wanting to create something that captured both the hedgehog's sweet but indomitable character as well as something that symbolised its long history with these islands.
It was the radial pattern of the hedgie's spines gave me the idea of creating an acanthus leaf surround (a motif typical of the middle ages, and therefore, the past).
Here the hedgie is a symbol of hope, emerging from its camouflaged surrounds, its bright button eyes fixed upon us as its potential saviours, and - perhaps - on a better future.
