From an article in a National Geographic issue, I chose to draw Maria because of the wonderful light in the picture and her serene gaze.

The article is about rebuilding after the 1994 Rwandan genocide, which is why the calmness of Maria struck me so deeply.

The paper used is from an old book 'The country diary of an Edwardian lady' and was a beautiful surface to paint and draw on.
