Artist's description:

Tropical foliage in Honolulu, including a papaya tree and a banana tree. 1985 & 2016

This painting started out as an acrylic painting - in the 80's! I was expecting my daughter and she's 32 now. So it sat in a closet quietly waiting for years, traveled in multiple moves and waited patiently, unfinished. This is a work on canvas panel.

Fast forward to 2016. Recently I "discovered" my piles of unfinished art.

Ya know, when an artist gets started later in life, sometimes there is a sadness because so much time has been wasted. I refused to accept that and then suddenly I realized - it's not been wasted! I have always been working. What I haven't done has been "finishing". So I set to work.

So, the acrylic elements of Makiki are over 30 years old. Now I decided to finish it but not with acrylics. Well, I did repaint the sky a little with paint, but now I went in with watercolor pencils and finally oil paint marker.

I am really loving the effects you can get doing watercolor over acrylic. See for example the details of the banana leaves. I also love the durability of the acrylics as a ground because you can scrub on it and saturate it with water and the acrylic stays put.

Materials used:

acrylic paint, watercolor paint, oil markers
