The idea of this painting began as a small, preliminary drawing with hint of watercolour a few years ago. It was originally an exercise in monochrome; shades of black, grey and white with the exception of the rich velvety tones of a deep red rose to match the red lips and nails of the girl. The intention was to use the drawing for a mezzo tint as I thought that the fluidity of the skin tones, rose petals and fabric would work well using that particular print technique. The subject, the girl is of no one I know. She is a decorative symbol of femininity, a design. I had in mind that It would be the sort of painting I'd like in a bedroom or as a Valentine's day gift.
However, last year I decided to use the drawing that I had kept, scaled it up and decided to produce a large painting from it. It morphed from a monochrome into a series of grey green blues, silky cream champagne yellows and pearly iridescent hues. The painting holds a certain melancholy decadence that is both haunting and seductive.
