This is a view of Dalkey Island from Killiney Hill in county Dublin, Ireland.
I often work from memory. I start by applying a colour or colours in loose ways and then seek an opening to see how what is on the board conjures up a memory of a special place or a special atmosphere even though I could not always pinpoint where that is.
For this painting, I used a combination of memory and, to get an accurate topography, photos.
The sea can be silver and mirror like or as in this piece, an ever-changing patchwork of light and dark blue that matches the clouds shifting above to create endless arrangements of colour.
