Artist's description:

My family history includes 18th century settlement in Kentucky; my grandfather and father collected and saved many letters and other memorabilia from the Robbins, Myers, Scott and Wilkerson families. I recently found a packet of correspondence from one of my female ancestors, who attended teacher's college in the late 18th century. Having traveled a great deal myself recently, I thought about how she must have felt being away from home and doing something as courageous as getting higher education as an 18th century Southern woman. This collage includes some of the letters, and serves as my tribute to strong women.

Materials used:

acrylic paint, found objects, wax, photographs
