I've always been slightly fascinated by umbrellas. They are there for a reason but in many societies have been used to flirtatiously hide behind. Probably not in the UK judging by the amount of rain we get here and in most of northern Europe I think the novelty could soon wear off. This painting was inspired by a trip to Istanbul ( bizarre I know) the sea of faces walking on the narrow street next to the bazaar. I loved this painting and let go of it very begrudgingly!
