The Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched on its “balcony” overlooking the Borromeo Gulf, is one of the most intriguing historical sites on Lake Maggiore. You reach it from the lake by climbing a flight of 80 steps, or you can descend the 240 steps from the car park above.
Picturesquely located on a sheer cliff above the water, the Hermitage was founded in the 12th century by the merchant Alberto Besozzi of Arolo (Leggiuno), who on being shipwrecked took refuge in a cave and vowed devotion to St Catherine. In 1195 he built a tiny, isolated church in recognition of his deliverance. The present buildings date from the late 13th – early 14th centuries.
WHAT IS AN ETCHING?: these are aquatint etchings, handprinted by me, the artist, with the best etching inks and on a really beautiful piece of creamy printmaking paper. An etching is a handmade print, from a zinc plate made by the artist, inked up by the artist, inking has to be done for each and every print, every step of the process involves the artist, which is why etchings are known as Original Prints. That is also why they are all unique.
SIZE: This etching is made up out of 2 different small zinc plates, all inked up individually before being assembled and printed together, the measurement for the image, are all the plates together.
The beautiful velvety printmaking paper measures 17.5cm x 25 cm ( 7" x 10") or it can be printed on a bigger paper,
25cm x 35cm (10" x 14")
and the zinc plates, the actual images, together, measure 18cm x 9 cm ( 7" x 4")
You can choose from different colours, Soft Black, Prussian Blue, Fuchsia
EDITION: I sign, title and number each print.
This etching is printed in a limited edition of 50 prints, this means that once the edition is finished, I scratch the zinc plates, ensuring that they can't be printed from again.
Please be aware I can't guarantee you get the number in the photo.
