We are fortunate to have Lavender fields in this part of Surrey, and every year I take great pleasure in visiting this area to soak up the scented air, and to photograph and sketch the blue haze that seems to stretch to the horizon.
I painted white cotton fabric with the beautiful blues, mauves and greens, and stitched the details with my favoured technique of free motion machine embroidery. It is drawing with a needle and thread instead of with a pen or pencil, giving a unique surface texture that is tactile as well as visually exciting. Each of the three pieces were then stitched down onto a background, and were connected with some further lines of simple stitching. Hand embroidered poppies in red add the finishing touches.
