This painting was born out of my life-long interest in pre-Christian England, folklore and gardens. It features a foliate mask or Jack-in-the-Green face peering from an old garden wall ~ he is a well known symbol of pagan times when people believed they could ensure a good harvest by dressing youths in leaves and dancing through the fields. The lamb, a symbol of Christianity, wears a circlet of ivy to show how the early church grafted pagan symbolism onto it's own ideologies to try to draw the pagan peoples to Christ.
Not framed but ready to hang.
