Red and blue seem to occur frequently in work created during a certain period of my life. These symbolically contrasting colours set the mood of this piece which was one of my first original paintings created after closing my dance studio. Faced with the prospect of reinventing myself, I felt quite lost for a time and this was when Lady with Umbrella made her debut appearance into my work. She appears in a cold, blue moonlit landscape wearing a blue dress and carrying a bright red umbrella. In the foreground her reflection is cast in the rain puddles behind her along with the leafless stump of what remains of a tree. She moves forward into an empty, mysterious picture plane, towards a place that can't be seen.
