Artist's description:

The Lady of the Lake's origins are often shrouded in mystery. In Arthurian Legend, or at least some versions of it, she gifts Arthur with the magical sword Excalibur. And that single concept is the backbone of this painting. How the Lady of the Lake comes to have such magical powers, or indeed her identity and motivations vary and are often unclear. For me, that mystery is part of the charm and lure of her character.

I had the idea of using a very limited colour palette, and using a vibrant green to suggest a connection to nature, or something spiritual. There's an element of medieval and celtic symbology in the design of the markings, which I wanted to suggest something mythical, ancient and powerful. I loved being bold and expressive with the brush strokes of the hair and sword. Painting her was a great experience.
