'Kii Hantō Hillside' is one of 5 from Gillies's latest collection of 2018 reflecting on his travel and artistic research in Japan.
It was created using acrylic paints and a scratch technique to reveal tree foliage. The painting has a coating of clear epoxy resin, giving it a high gloss finish. A surface the artist has intended for his works for many years, this is the first collection to receive the treatment.
This painting was, in fact, the first painting from this collection where the artists scratching effect originated. And this was the first painting to receive the resin coating. So its completely right to state this painting heralds a new era in his artwork.
The scene contains, in the upper to the midsection, a hinted at forested mountainous backdrop in soft bamboo jade / green colors with tones of turquoise and blues. The midsection is a soft copper tone, has defined tree areas where the artist has scratched out the surface color to reveal white trees. The indication of pale white mist leading into a calm water where the colors are continued back into the soft jade greens of the upper painting. The color tones are very light and soft giving the atmosphere of early dawn, perhaps springtime.
