Artist's description:

Last year I had the fortune of being able to travel with my family in Japan. While we were there we learned more about local folklore. There are many supernatural creatures and beliefs in Japan which are categorised under the title of Yokai. The Kappa, are one of the most popular Yokai in Japan. A Kappa is a mythical creature which inhabits wetlands of Japan. It is known to have a green appearance, a turtle shell and a indentation on it's skull. Whilst the skull indentation has water in it, the Kappa has superhuman strength, but if that water falls out, the Kappa loses his force. I am interested in this local mythology which occupies a liminal space in culture.

And the setting of the painting is in a magical region of the Japanese alps called Kamikochi. In Japanese the Kami are the spirits, this Kamikochi is the home of the spirits!
