Falljökull Glacier, Iceland where the movie Interstellar was filmed.
Part of a series of photographs taken during a week in Iceland exploring ice caves and glaciers.
The patterns in the ice are like abstract paintings. The blue-ness or cloudiness of the ice is caused by how much compression it has undergone during the formation of the glacier.
The black stripes are like the rings in a tree - marking the varying annual depth of snowfall (now compressed glacier ice) and falling ash from volcanic eruptions. Riven through with 30m deep crevasses, it's essential to have a guide and crampons to venture across this wild terrain!
Printed as an image 16"x12" with 2" white border. Total paper size 20"x16".
