Artist's description:

These are the 3rd and 4th canvases of "John and Mary" which were completed c1972/73. My ex Larry Butler posed for John and his friend walking along the road. I did drawings of him and for the whole composition. Friends posed for photos in their car.( not a mini) I thought the mini was a popular car then and am glad the overall model has survived in a modernised version. Godfrey Pilkington (director of the Piccadilly Gallery Cork St W1 now long gone) saw a photo of this one when he was interested in my work and wanted to come and see it. I panicked as I wanted to finish the whole series which i knew would take a lot more work and ultimately I wanted to show the canvases in a circle… so i tried explain he said tell me when you finish… it took 6 yrs, he'd lost interest by then and i did show them as I wanted in 1979 but the critic who came disliked them and wrote appreciatively about my other work, watercolours and etchings… I started painting the series in acrylic when it was newish and found it a bit heavy and unsympathetic compared to oils so i did the 3rd canvas of John and his friend walking in oils. Then i discovered a more free flowing acrylic and continued with that for the rest of the series.
