Artist's description:

i've decided to post the John and Mary paintings in five parts as the long series of 9 canvases in the photograph is too wide and narrow to be able to appreciate the paintings, The first canvas of the Happy family "Photo" with the idyllic country cottage and garden is repeated at the end of the series as it connects with the last painting of the cemetery and 2 mourners at the grave.I actually painted this after the 2 canvases of John and Mary walking towards each other. The child with the cat in the family photos based on one of myself at about 7 yrs but none of the other portrayals of Mary are based on me. various friends posed for drawings with their children for drawings i did and i took photos too for reference but largely i worked from imagination. I was very inspired by Piero della Francesco's paintings of the story of the true cross at Arezzo which i had only seen in a book then and also Luis Bunuel's film of the "Discreet charm of the Bourgouisie" and the walk along a road of the Bourgouisie characters that happens throughout the film periodically .The cottage is based on a drawing of one opposite Horsham station that I used to see often. The 9 paintings are only to be sold together and not separately although each painting is composed to be viewed as a single work as well as relating to the whole series.
