This is a digital collage of 2 images. The foreground is from a series of photos that I took on the Manassas battlefield in Virginia. The sunny summer day was so at odds with what had happened there so long ago, but as so often happens photographs manage to tell a more evocative story that we see with our naked eye. Shot on uncoated polaroid film, I left the prints to fade and bleach and the resulting smudged line of ominous black trees seems now to reflect the enormity of what happened there in the American Civil War so much more effectively than a blue sky and green trees. The background image is a portrait I made using the wet plate or collodion photographic process, the same process that the American Civil War photographer Matthew Brady used on that very battlefield over 150 years ago.
This print has an additional 2cm white border for framing.
