Hill 15 is a forest scene. The painting divided into thirds, the top being a light purple sky moving down into a hillside for the lower 2 thirds. The hillside is a mixture of a russet orange tone into a light mid-tone then the lower section is a dark heather purple tone. The feeling is very soft, and quiet. The tones are 'warm' although the scene has morning dawn feeling to it.
The hillside section features the artists' technique of delicately scratching out the watercolour to make the tree branches.
The painting is finished with a coating of clear resin. Gillies uses resin as his prefered finish as it distributes light in a way glass or varnish cant. It also has an effect on the intensity of the colour of the paint, Gillies likes the way this works on the watercolour paint, it also protects and seals the painting.
The Japanese Forest Collection was inspired by a winter spent in Japan exploring the beautiful landscape and forests. These paintings are produced with a watercolor set Gillies picked up in Tokyo and has been working with for his most recent paintings.
