I had set this display as a subject for one of the art groups I teach and was inspired to paint it myself. I had in my studio a large painted canvas given to me by a student who hadn't liked her painting. It consisted of a slightly textured melange of green splodges and dribbles and I could understand why she had discarded it. As it was an ideal size I scraped down the surface texture and started painting without further ado, reasoning that the ghastly green would eventually be completely obscured when the painting was completed. However, before long, I realised that the background colour perfectly complemented the green of the leaves and decided to leave it with very little alteration. The result is a contrast between the moody, somewhat mysterious background and the joyous pink dance of the curling petals.
