The 'Inland Sea' paintings were begun in Greece in Stoupa, a small town in the Peloponnese, around an hour's drive from Kalamata. Whilst there I read a wonderful book by the Icelandic author Halldor Laxness called The Fish Can Sing. The novel is set in the small hamlet of Brekukot and tells the story of Alfgrimur growing up with his grandparents. I was moved by the boy's descriptions of fishing with his grandfather in the dawn light; in the lagoon close by his home, hence the title the Inland Sea.
I began the work by staining the beautiful linen with washes of liquid acrylics, building up the depth of colour and multiple tones.
If you're looking for two paintings of this size this one has a sibling.
